Eek. My heart weeps. I guess this question neatly illustrates the
contrast between Pink Floyd fans who approach the band from an "FM
rock" angle and those who approach them from a more "proggy
space-rock" angle.

these rockers I like for a variety of reasons.
[lists of love letter recipients deleted]

Pointless. You've simply taken the cast of characters from the micro-
universe of your beloved 70s prog and hard rock bands and sorted them
into categories by instrument. Anyone who claims that John Paul Jones
is his favorite keyboard player in all of rock is a Zeppelin groupie,
nothing more. What's next, favorite album covers by Yes, Pink Floyd
and Led Zep? Favorite liner notes by these bands?

He did a wonderful job on keyboards, several Zep songs (Kashmir, Your
Time is Gonna Come, No Quarter, Rain Song etc). I am glad to a
Zeppelin fan by the way, nothing wrong with that.

You listed 61 bands throughout those lists, but only 28 *different*
bands. That's an awful lot of repetition. And as someone else said,
it was obviously just a case of reflexively filling in the names
from your pet favorite bands...otherwise, you wouldn't be listing
mediocrities such as, say, Rick Wright, Ray Thomas and the
supporting Van der Graaf players as the ultimate musicians.

You've been listening to rock music for just six years, and have a
very small range of interests/knowledge.

Certainly Barrett's no great vocalist. Out of the batch, depending on
what sort of band to build Morrison and Anderson would be right up
there. Dunno who Harry might pair with on the list as I don't know
several of them.

Plant had an incredible pre 73!. They did too much of touring and he
lost his voice.

Yes he doesnt do anything incredible with his vocals. But he has a
sharp voice (if that makes any sense) unlike anyone and it is very
British. And I love British accent.

there. Dunno who Harry might pair with on the list as I don't know
several of them.
Harry could probably sing duet with Barrett or Renate Knaup (who is a
female btw).

Ha Ha!, not 1....but 2 Yes drummers ahead of Keith Moon! LOL! I guess
I shouldn't be surprised. I just can't believe you didn't put the
drummers from Kraftwerk, Can, and Van der Graaf Generator ahead of him

I made a mistake then. Both the drummers from Can and VDGG were
better! Kraftwerk ofcourse had an excellent Klaus Dinger as a drummer
for a very short period but I wouldnt probably put him ahead of Moon.

I am not a big fan of Moon. I think he was quite one-dimensional. He
was very talented and could drum loud. But he was also selfish and
tried to power his way in some songs in which he shouldnt have..
especially on Quadrophenia.

Good for you, you like him a lot. I have respect for him, but he is
not my favorite drummer.

I bet you haven't never heard Guy Evans from VDGG or Jaki Liebezeit
from Can. Both are extra-ordinary drummers, who pretty much took
drumming to a new level. You make fun of these bands and you haven't
even heard them. I like The Who quite a lot, even though are
overhyped.

Obscure? You jest.

Try some really obscure bands and then we'll see.

Malicorne, Wimme, The Tansads, Cold Water Flat, Salsa Celtica, JIF,
Stackridge, Mostly Autumn

I can get even more obscure than that but that would be drifting too
far away from what you would understand as rock. Mind you, I probably
already have ...

ah yes... The Who were better than most of the of other great bands at
one thing.. show offism. Idiots bought that... much like those Kiss
fans. Nice way to mask your incapability to play leads... by using the
windmill strumming, jumping up and down like a monkey and then shaking
your butt. I would say "Nice Try". You still can't play blues for crap
and are quite lousy with your same repetitive chord patterns.

Don't be so hasty, Raja. First of all, even if he were wrong about the
type of bow, that would not prove that he doesn't "know squat about
Zeppelin." The exact type of bow Page used is trivia of the most
inconsequential sort, and certainly is not necessary to an
understanding of the band's music. Understanding the music is more
important than memorizing trivial details.

Second, there *is* a lot of support for the contention that it was, in
fact, a cello bow. E.g.:
"["Dazed and Confused"] also showcased Page playing guitar with a
cello bow (an idea suggested by David McCallum Sr., whom Page had met
while doing studio session work)."
http://chrisgoesrocks.blogspot.com/2007/10/led-zeppelin-led-zeppelin-i-classic.html

The Wikipedia entry on this point is a Wiki classic of internal
contradiction, as it first IDs one, then the other:
"Page is famous for playing his guitar with a cello bow, as on the
songs 'Dazed and Confused,' 'How Many More Times' and in the interlude
of 'Whole Lotta Love.' This was a technique he developed during his
session days, although strictly speaking he was not the first
guitarist to use a violin bow, since Eddie Phillips of The Creation
had done so prior to Page."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Page

Moral: Don't be too sure of yourself.

1. Windmill strumming *does* produce a different sound, like a sudden
crashing and more overdriven than if you just strummed, given the same
guitar/amp settings. I know because I do it.

2. Page used cello bows on at least some occasions.

Yeah, no other bands had any showmanship. No light shows, no lead singers
strutting all over the stage.
Light shows were used by the cosmic bands like Yes, Floyd etc. It
supplants their music.

But blowing up drum kits, smashing guitars, windmill strums all seem a
bit unnecessay and quite assaholic. If the Who wanted to potray
themselves as assholes (like Sex Pistols did), they did a good job
then.

There are two categories - showing off the talent (Emerson, Page,
Hendrix etc) and showing off to mask the lack of talent (Townshend -
cant play lead so lets windmill strum and break guitars, KISS etc)

You're drowning and going down for the third time here, Raja. Give it up.

To remind: Hendrix (a) played with his teeth; (b) played with the guitar
behind his back; (c) used the mic stand as a slide; (b) set his guitars on
fire. I'm sure others can come up with many more examples of Hendrix's
showmanship that was totally unconnected with his playing ability. So now
what's your excuse?

All this has no bearing whatsoever on ability. Townsend was no Hendrix (nor
did he ever claim to be) but he was a decent lead/rhythm guitarist and a

Hendrix is one of the greatest guitarist of all time. He was a master
of feedback. He could play guitar with his penis and that could still
be music.

All this has no bearing whatsoever on ability. Townsend was no Hendrix (nor

Nobody his disputing his songwriting ability. And nobody is disputing

The point is, you implied that Hendrix didn't need to do it because he was
good but Townsend did because he was bad. I quote:

"showing off to mask the lack of talent (Townshend - cant play lead so lets

Later you agree he was decent. Make up your mind!

In both cases (Townsend and Hendrix), it was part of the show, period. It
had nothing to do with their playing ability.

I dont know what your defintion of "decent" is. I think Townshend is
an outstanding guitar player. theres a lot more to me to playing
guitar than simply whizzing scales up and down the neck.

but then again, you cant play guitar or write songs or play in a band

There are too many outstanding guitarists out there. Townshend might
be just outside the top 25 guitarists of all time. Which is not bad.
Townshend biggest weakness was he re-used his chord patterns and
relied on power chords too much. He wasnt a great blues guitarist by
any means. And there were hardly any "wow" solos by him, a trademark
of most great guitarists.

i dont think in terms of listing and comparing with other people.

I simply compare it with i know what I can do, and the people I play
with, and the recordings I played on, and shows I played, and all that
crap, and that guy is a zillion miles ahead of me, in every respect.

Whether he is "better" or worse than Steve Howe or George Harrison, i
could not care less.

these guys are all giants in their field, a very difficult field to
even stay steadily employed in, much less become a star.

I beg to differ. Ever heard his fingerpicking on Sunrise? Ever heard
him soloing on electric on Isle of Wight? He's an excellent guitarist,
in my book anyway.

That title belongs to Townshend: the master of feedback. Also, don't
forget who invented controlled feedback on a pop number...John Lennon.
I am not entirely sure if the Beatles were the first, but if they
weren't they popularized the sound and may have influenced other
guitarists such as Beck and Hendrix.

It seems like we went round and round on this issue in RMB a few months ago.
I'm too lazy to look it up, but it seems to me we concluded Lennon wasn't
the first, although it totally escapes me who is. Maybe PR (Danny's guru)
can chime in here.

Was that in 1966? If so, I wasn't there. I've been to most of his
concerts in 1967 and 1968 and I've saw him smashing and burning his
guitars or either walking around the stage half intoxicated. I don't
recall him playing behind his back although I probably wasn't paying
much attention.

I am into keyboards, not guitar. And yes, I can't play the keyboard
that well either because I have hardly practiced on it. With practice
I will get better.

If I get anywhere close to that level, I will be in a well known band
already. You will be paying to see my clips online.

I can't believe you're actually following this train of thought Raja.
There are thousands of great guitarists out there that aren't in
distinguished bands (Ollie Halsall anyone?). Just because you are
great doesn't necessarily mean you'll be in a well known band.

ah yes... The Who were better than most of the of other great bands at
one thing.. show offism. Idiots bought that... much like those Kiss
fans. Nice way to mask your incapability to play leads... by using the
windmill strumming, jumping up and down like a monkey and then shaking
your butt. I would say "Nice Try". You still can't play blues for crap
and are quite lousy with your same repetitive chord patterns.
Yeah, you've contibuted so much more to rock music!
Heeeeey, wait a second. No, you didn't!
You almost got me there!
I am not comparing myself to Townshend Einsten.
Good, because I have no idea who Townshend Einstein is.

I am comparing him to the greats. If he is ranked 26th all time in my book that is an
incredible achievement
Yes, I'm sure he's very proud of that.

On the other hand, who in the fuck cares even the tiniest little bit?
Post by S.F.BZY
but there are still 25 greater guitarists than him.
I think you mismeasured. There are actually precisely 1/e ~ 36,7879441%
greater guitarists.
