Neighbor of mine had one in '68. The brown one: Most common, maybe
the only manufacturer at the time.

Don't have the album handy but I'm pretty sure electric sitar was
credited on the notes, and Wikipedia says it was one played by Mike
Rutherford on the studio recording and Hackett live.

I hadn't realized it was a sitar because the intervals played are
entirely Western. Somehow, it seems almost mocking of the instrument, to
go out of your way to obtain one and somebody competent to play it and
then to require that the music produced be merely 4/4 and chromatic.

I guess it's not, though, since it's the artist's choice and art's funny
that way.

Here's a pretty obscure one: On the Todd Rundgren album Initiation, he
plays one on the title song "Initiation." What's cool is that it's an
overdriven lead guitar solo (with occasional fills). Never heard an
electric sitar like that before.

I only remember the first 3 or 4 tracks on that album. Maybe I never
got past those?! I always loved "Real Man", though.

Here's a few of my nominations for best use of an electric sitar on a
song:

Kashmir- Led Zeppelin(off Physical Graffiti)

I Still Love You- Bee Gees(off Living Eyes)

Within You, Without You- The Beatles(off the Sgt. Pepper album)

Paint It Black- The Rolling Stones(off Aftermath in the USA; released
only as a single in the UK. Foreign editions of Aftermath had Mother's
Little Helper as the opening track. I have a German Decca pressing of
Aftermath and that is how I know)

Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)- The Beatles(off Rubber Soul)

Nevertheless- The Rutles(off The Rutles album)

That is my list. I hope that everyone has a nice evening.Sincerely

Me too. Page or Jones never played sitar or electric sitar. It would
have been great to hear it. He is perhaps confusing the violins (of
the orchestra) with sitar.

Excuse Me Nil and Raja

According to a book by Chris Welch called Led Zeppelin, this is what
Jimmy Page said regarding this:

"I had a sitar for quite some time and I was interested modal tunings
and Arabic stuff. It started off with a riff and then employed Eastern
lines underneath."

I hope that this settles things.Sincerely Frank R.Schoonover

Well, no, I don't think it does. I listened carefully to the record,
and I hear no sitar used there. If you do, please tell me specifically
where.

Page's quote is ambiguous, but I think he is saying Kashmir was a
result of his interest in eastern music, but not that a sitar itself
had anything to do with it.
