Looking at Zeppelin, they excelled in all departments...
Singer - Amazing vocal range of Robert Plant until he lost his voice
circa 1972
Guitarist - Page is a God many will agree
Bassist - Jones is a bass God, many will agree
Keyboardist - Jones played keyboards on a lot more songs than you
think (in fact more than 50% of the songs). And he was excellent.
Listen to No Quarter live
Drummer - Bonham is the God of all drummers.
So who else was equally talented in all these departments.... many
prog rock and hard rock/metal bands came close but did not nail it.
PROG BANDS
----------------------
Emerson Lake Palmer.... Lake is okay, but not a virtuoso singer like
Plant. He is not a virtuoso guitarist like Page either.
King Crimson.... best line up was probably the debut line up - Lake/
Fripp/McDonald/Giles.... Giles was an excellent drummer and McDonald
was the main guy in the band. They lasted only one album though. Again
Lake is the weak point here.
Genesis.... best line up was Gabriel/Hackett/Rutherford/Banks/
Collins.... I wouldnt consider Hackett or Rutherford to be virtuoso,
even if they are, they were completely overshadowed by Banks and
Collins. And contrary to most prog fans, I find Gabriel's voice
annoying. I find him mumbling most of the times.
Jethro Tull...their strongest line up is the one who made their best
album Stand Up - Anderson/Barre/Cornick/Bunker. Cornick was an
excellent bassist. Bunker was a very good drummer. Barre is a great
underrated rock guitarist. But they are let down by the shoddy vocals
in my opinion. And lack of an excellent keyboardist.
Van Der Graaf Generator.... the best line up was the one which made H
to He Who Am the Only One. i.e the one with Hammill/Potter/Banton/
Jackson/Evans. Guy Evans is one of the best prog drummers and Jackson
was somewhat of a sax virtuoso. Banton was very good on keyboards as
well. And Nic Potter was a very good bassist. Hammill is sometimes
overly theatrical but had an excellent range. The only weakness is
lack of a lead guitarist. May be they should have invited Robert Fripp
to join the band?
Hawkwind... Best line up was the band which made their best album
(live) Space Ritual. This was a 7 member band! with two vocalist -
David Brock and Robert Calvert. Sadly the vocals were the weakest
part. But the rest of the band was excellent. Great synth players -
Michael Davis and Del Dettmar, monster drummer Simon King, monster
bassist Ian Kilmester (Lemmy) and sax great (Nick Turner)
Rush....These guys musically were on par with Led Zeppelin in my
opinion. But they lacked a full time keyboardist. And Lee was decent
but not great on keyboards.... I would say the same about this vocals.
Pink Floyd... One of my favorite bands.... But there is no way I can
say anyone apart from Rick Wright and David Gilmour are virtuoso in
the band. Mason is the weak link. And they never had singer who had a
good range. I find Syd Barrett to the best singer (many fans hate his
voice). Roger Waters is underrated, but not a virtuosos though.
HARD ROCK/METAL BANDS
------------------------------------------
The Who... their hard rock status is debatable.... but many consider
them hard rock. So what the heck....I find Daltrey positively
annoying. Townsend is not a good lead guitarist. And I find Moon to be
one-dimensional. So that leaves John Entwistle. And Townsend is no
match to Jones on keyboards.
Black Sabbath.... great bassist (Butler) and guitarist (Iommi). Ward
was not bad either. But Ozzy was really a weak vocalist
Aerosmith.... nowhere in the league of Zeppelin
KISS.... nowhere in the league of Zeppelin
AC/DC.... Angus Young and Michael Young are good guitarists but not
Page even when combined together ;-) Their drummers or bassists dont
matter. Bon Scott was a funny singer. I like him. And I like Brian
Johnson before he lost his voice, but both are no Plant.
Van Halen... except Eddie Van Halen no one in the band matters if we
were to compare them to Zeppelin
Iron Maiden.... best line up of the band was the one which made -
Dickinson/Murray/Smith/Harris/Burr. No keyboardist kills it. Otherwise
an excellent band. Vocals are great too.
Metallica.... sorry but I dont consider Hammett or Hetfield to be
great guitarist. Their best man was their bassist Cliff Burton. I dont
consider Lars Ulrich to be that great either. I dont dig the vocals
either
Judas Priest.... sorry but except Rob Halford, no one in the band was
in the league of the Zepsters.....
So that leaves..... the best prog band and best hard rock/metal band
ever (after Led Zeppelin ;-)) ..... Yes and Deep Purple. These two
are the only ones in my opinion who in the league of Zeppelin...
Deep Purple vs Led Zeppelin
-------------------------------------------
Gillan vs Plant = tie
Blackmore vs Page = Page (slight edge)
Glover vs Jones = Jones
Lord vs Jones = tie
Paice vs Bonham = Bonham (slight edge)
Yes vs Led Zeppelin
------------------------------
Anderson vs Plant = Plant (slight edge, yes I do love Anderson's
voice)
Howe vs Page = tie (both are versatile)
Squire vs Jones = tie
Wakeman vs Jones = tie (or may be slight edge to Wakeman)
Bruford vs Bonham = tie
